If you’re planning to visit China, it’s important to be aware of the blocked websites and apps you might encounter due to the country’s internet restrictions. So what websites and apps are blocked in China?

As someone from China working in Hong Kong, I’ve come across a wide range of websites and apps that are blocked back in China due to strict internet regulations. While this list is subject to change, I can share a comprehensive overview based on my knowledge.

This list serves as a general reference, but it is essential to note that the Chinese government frequently updates and adjusts its censorship measures, but based on my testing in September, these sites are still inaccessible in China.

Of course, most of the time, you can simply use a VPN to unblock these websites and apps in China, so it’s very important to find a VPN product that really works in China.

Why websites are blocked in China?

Websites are blocked in China because the government wants to control what people can access online. They have this thing called the Great Firewall that filters and monitors internet traffic. They block websites for all sorts of reasons, like political censorship, sensitive content, or anything that they think could challenge their authority or national security.

Additionally, websites involving pornography, gambling, or violence are blocked to maintain societal order. The government also justifies the blocking of certain platforms for reasons of national security, protecting against cyber threats, and safeguarding the ideological and cultural values it seeks to uphold. Through these measures, the government exercises control over the digital landscape in China.

How many websites has China blocked?

The exact number of websites blocked in China is not publicly disclosed (probably more than 8,000 websites to date), and the list of blocked websites is continually changing. However, it is well-known that China employs one of the most extensive internet censorship systems in the world, commonly referred to as the Great Firewall.

This system restricts access to numerous foreign websites and platforms, including popular social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram, as well as news outlets and other websites that are deemed politically sensitive or in violation of Chinese regulations. The scope of blocked websites in China is substantial, impacting a wide range of online content and platforms.

What is the Great Firewall of China?

The Great Firewall of China is a powerful system of internet censorship and control that regulates online information flow within China’s borders. With a massive population and the world’s largest online community, China has developed this complex infrastructure to filter and restrict access to sensitive or politically threatening content.

The Great Firewall employs various techniques such as deep packet inspection, keyword filtering, and IP blocking to scrutinize internet traffic and selectively block websites and services. Its goals extend beyond politics, emphasizing national security, protection from harmful content, and preservation of cultural values. However, critics argue that it limits freedom of expression, stifles innovation, and fosters self-censorship.

The impact of the Great Firewall is not confined to China alone. Global tech companies seeking access to the Chinese market must comply with local regulations, leading to debates about corporate responsibility and the potential spread of censorship practices.

How to access blocked sites in China?

Accessing blocked sites in China can be tough because of the strict internet censorship imposed by the Great Firewall. But don’t worry, there are a few tricks you can try to get around these restrictions and access blocked websites:

  1. Use a VPN: VPN services are popular and effective for accessing blocked sites in China. They encrypt your internet connection and send it through a server outside of China, so you can browse the web anonymously. With a VPN, you can bypass the censorship of the Great Firewall and hide your IP address.
  2. Try Proxy Servers: Proxy servers act as middlemen between your device and the websites you want to visit. By using a proxy server located outside of China, you can ask it to fetch web pages for you, bypassing censorship. There are both free and paid proxy server options available.
  3. Explore the Tor Browser: The Tor browser is all about privacy. It routes your internet traffic through a network of volunteer-operated servers, making it hard for anyone to track your online activities. While using Tor, you can bypass censorship and access blocked sites in China, but keep in mind that it might slow down your browsing speed.
  4. Consider DNS Tunneling: DNS tunneling involves using alternative DNS servers that aren’t subject to Chinese censorship. By changing your DNS settings, you can dodge the restrictions and access blocked websites. DNSCrypt and Shadowsocks are examples of services that offer DNS tunneling options.
  5. Use Mobile Data: Sometimes, using mobile data instead of Wi-Fi can work because mobile networks face less strict censorship. However, keep in mind that the effectiveness may vary depending on your location and the specific mobile network provider.

Remember, the Chinese government actively monitors and blocks tools that help you get around censorship. So, it’s essential to stay updated on the latest methods and choose reliable and secure services to protect your online privacy and security. And of course, it’s always a good idea to follow local laws and regulations while using these methods.

Is it legal to use a VPN in China?

Disclaimer: Please note that I’m not qualified to provide legal advice. Therefore, if you decide to use a VPN, you assume all associated risks.

That being said, my understanding is that using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) itself is not inherently illegal. VPNs utilize technology developed to extend the benefits of private networks to internet browsing or public network use.

In essence, a VPN is software designed to enhance the security of your connection. It creates a secure tunnel for data transmission (for more technical details, click here). Many universities and even Chinese government offices use VPN systems to isolate their internal networks from the public.

The real concern lies in accessing websites that are not permitted in China. As for whether this constitutes a crime, we honestly cannot provide any advice or certainty on the matter.

From a practical standpoint, I believe the Chinese government is unlikely to be greatly concerned if you use a VPN to access your Facebook profile or Dropbox account.

However, it’s crucial to recognize that if you engage in fraudulent activities online, whether through a VPN or not, you are taking a risk both within China and internationally.
